I have been contemplating painting the china cabinet in our dining room for quite some time, but I keep going back and forth. I like that it matches the table and it's in really good shape, just not my first choice for the color of wood. (It was from my hubby's house before we were married) I'm very thankful for it but just feel like maybe it needs a change? It would be quite a big project to take on. So...I'm asking your opinion? To paint or not to paint? I'm thinking of painting it white and painting the inside of the cabinet gray. I think my white milk glass collection would really pop against the gray. My husband thinks I'm crazy for wanting to paint this, you think he'd be used to it by now :)
Here is what it looks like now...
and here are some inspiring images of what it could be if painted...
something two toned like this, only gray and white...
I just ran across this cabinet that centsational girl did and it is almost exactly what I had in mind...
this one from Little Green Notebook is adorable too, love the pattern...
or this one that Holly from inthefunlane.com did for Frugal Contessa...
So what's a girl to do?

Paint it. A lot of work yes but the result would be so beautiful...
PAINT! grey, white, and yellow are my new favs.. not digging the wood... LET THE PAINTING BEGIN!
You could sell it with the matching table, get a sweet NEW table, and get a different inexpensive china cabinet to go to town with white paint on.
BUT, I totally 100% support painting it white even though the detail in the cabinet/drawer fronts is beautiful, it would update it a ton to do the gray/white theme. But then I sorta feel like I would want to stain the table dark.
Okay, so I vote for option one, sell them both and get fun new ones! Your poor husband is going to hate me for saying that.
Love your blog, you have some great ideas and amazing talent. I would totally paint it. It would look awesome painted!
Im with you on this. I think painting it is the way to go, Im not a huge fan of "blonde wood" either. The only thing is, I couldn't tell what color your dining room walls are, but you don't seem like someone who would leave your walls white.
paint it white and paint the inside a warmer color! decorate with white dishes and things...
you could make this so cute!
New to your blog, but really enjoy it and am going to chime in as well. I say paint it! Maybe even do a pretty wallpaper on the inside... Can't wait to see the end result!
white and gray? hell ya. i say TOTALLY paint it. :)
You should PAINT it!
White and grey sounds really good to me!
Go for it girl;)
Can`t wait to see the result!
Looks like the verdict is in! I had a feeling that was what you all were going to say I just needed a little push to do it. I will definitly share the end result when I get there! Thanks for your input!
Definitely PAINT! It would look Stunning!
It depends on what kind of wood it is. If that's just veneer, then paint away! It's a shame to see real wood furniture painted.
I say PAINT as well. It will lighten it up a ton and love the grey contrast.
Can't wait to see pics. :)
I say paint the backing first, and see if that adds a new twist that you might like..something dark like a dark heather or even something close to charcoal would be nice...then if you still want it white--go for the white :)
Cbellabell, that's exactly why I'm having trouble painting it. It's solid wood and in perfect condition but it looks like the verdict is to paint it :) LaRae that is a great idea! I hadn't thought about that, thanks for your input!
DON'T DO IT! The two-toned wood color is just gorgeous, and very "mod" looking. Just add some new hardware. I agree with the suggestion to just paint - or even better, wallpaper! - the backing first to see how you like it!
