It seems everyone is adding drum shades to their fans these days, including me. If it were totally up to me I would take that thing down in a heartbeat, but it's definitely functional and my husband would not be too happy about it. Sometimes you just have to compromise. So, I decided to just switch out the previous light kit with a drum shade.
You can buy drum shade kits, but they will run you around $100.
I just removed the old light kit. Every fan is different, but usually if you just start turning it counter clockwise it should start to loosen everything up so you can remove it. Once the old kit was removed I was left with this. Do you see the coupling? The original threaded piece was not long enough so I found another piece in my garage and connected them with a coupling. You can find them in the lighting section of Lowe's.
Then, I turned my drum shade upside down and attached it to the threaded piece, just like you would if you were putting a shade on a lamp with a harp. I used the finial from the old light kit to hold it in place. I think the key to making this look less like "I just threw a drum shade up on my fan to make it look better" is to find a drum shade that is truly a drum shape with the top and the bottom diameter being the same. I think it also helps to find one that has a shorter depth, not as large as one you would put on a normal lamp.
I'm thinking about using this idea to finish off the bottom of the shade so you aren't looking at all the bulbs and everything from below. I'll have to modify it a little to accommodate the pull chains. I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to tackling it.
If you are starting from scratch and need an affordable, stylish fan (yes they do exist!) then I think this one from Lowe's is a great option for $199.

Looks great! That project was on my to-do list too, I even found a perfect shade at the thrift store. But, my husband agreed that we could take down the fan as long as we get a tower plug-in fan for the room instead. I'm ok with that...I can tuck it away when we have company or aren't using it. Now I'm on the hunt for a great chandy for my bedroom!

The ceiling fan in my bedroom has stopped working. I'm debating purchasing the one you showed from Lowes or going with a tower fan for the summer months. I just can't seem to make up my mind!
Thanks ladies! Kathleen, I think I would definitely go with a tower fan and find a fabulous chandelier! There are actually some nice looking floor fans at Homegoods if you hit them at the right time!
My mom just hung the fan from Lowe's in her bedroom and it is GORGEOUS!
Also? I spray painted my lamps yesterday and the foil worked like a charm!
