Poppy and Gray budget room makeover

Last week my sister and her family went to the beach for spring break, so I seized the opportunity to surprise her with a little room makeover.  We've (her and I) been planning and talking about this room makeover for what seems like forever.  We settled on a paint color, she bought the paint, and then life got busy and it sat in the garage for a few months.  So when I found out they would be away for a little bit, I thought it would be great opportunity to get a jump start on things and surprise her.

Here's a little background info on the room.  The walls have been the same color since they moved in almost ten years ago so it was definitely time for a change.  They originally had a queen size bed, but some sweet friends gave them a king sized mattress and box springs which meant they needed a new headboard and footboard.  My sister sold her bed and found another one for $50!  Of course it needed a little work, but I'll be sharing more about that later.  The budget for this makeover was pretty tight.  She sold a lot of things on Craigslist (including her bed) so that we could put that money back into the new room.  Eventually she would love to maybe get a different dresser and chest or paint her existing ones.   I also suggested switching on the mirror on her dresser but we just haven't come across the "right" one yet.  Also, my sister's style is different than my own which makes it a little challenging.  I wanted the room to feel like her and to be a space that she loves so I tried to keep that in mind.  She leans more toward rustic and cozy with a splash of color.

Enough about all that let's get to the good stuff.  First the "before" pictures because that always makes you appreciate the after so much more.

and after...

We are going to monogram this little red pillow eventually to add a nice personal touch.

I was so excited to come across this faux gazelle (?) head at T.J. Maxx.  It was already a great price but it happened to be missing an ear so they took off $11 which made it a steal.  The ear was actually made out of foam so it was an easy fix to just make another one and attach it.

For the styling, I used most of her existing accessories with a few fresh flowers thrown in to save money.

We ended up with a whole can of leftover paint after we finished the bedroom so I decided to carry the same color into the bathroom even though that wasn't part of the original plan.  I so wish I had taken before pictures.  The walls were a bright tealish blue color which totally clashed with the new room and the cabinets were painted cream.  It had been several years since she painted the cabinets and they were starting to show a lot of wear.  The shades on her light fixture were a swirly brown pattern.  They looked a little dated and dark so I just switched them out with some inexpensive clear ones.  I know you didn't see it before, but just that one thing made such a huge difference!

We also switched out the shower curtain for something graphic and fun.

I was totally worn out after three days of working hard, but there's nothing else I would have rather been doing.  I love being able to help people by using my creativity.  I'm planning to do a few follow up on posts on some of the details of the room so stay tuned for that.
