China Cabinet Makeover

Sorry for the lack of posting last week.  We had a nasty stomach bug make it's way through our house and we were all pretty much out of commission.  Our little one held out for a while, but ended up getting it towards the end of the week.  Thankfully we are all on the mend and finally getting back to normal!

My china cabinet recently got a new makeover.  We've had it since we got married and my husband had it in his house before that.  Ideally, I'd love to find a bamboo style hutch, but Craigslist hasn't had much like that lately.  Especially for the price I want to pay.  So, I decided to just give this one another coat of paint.  It's the cheapest way to update something without spending a fortune.

Here's where we started, 6 years ago.

The maple wasn't my thing so I painted it gray.  But, I did it quickly and didn't use the proper paint.  I just used what I had in my garage and it didn't hold up super well.  After lots of little sticky hands touching it and lots of use, it was in desperate need of a new makeover.

When we moved it was one of the first pieces I tackled.  There were lots of boxes just sitting in the office and I knew they were all pretty much going in the hutch if I could just get it done.  So I tried to knock it out pretty quickly.  I went with Rustoleum Oil Based paint in glossy black.  I actually used the white color on this dresser makeover a while back and really liked the results.

I ended up doing three coats, waiting 24 hours in-between.  This paint has great coverage but it is a little stinky so you want to make sure to paint in a well ventilated area and let it dry and air out before bringing it inside.  My only complaint is that the glossy black really shows imperfections.  I think that's the case with darker colors in general.  I noticed that when I painted my bedroom furniture too.  But I think the overall look is worth it and most people probably wouldn't notice the things that bother me about it.

Since the base is pretty plain, I've actually thought about adding some bamboo style molding to give it that bamboo look I love.  I can't seem to find any that won't cost a fortune though.  So if you know if a source I'm all ears!

  1. Oh yes to the shiny black! So pretty and bamboo detail would look amazing but I don't have a source :(

  2. Thanks Julia! I found one place that had it, but it would have cost me a fortune!

  3. What a difference! That was no small task my friend. And I love the way the white pops against the black. Glad you are feeling better!

  5. It's gorgeous in black, Bethany!! That is one of my favorite paints, but I've had the same issue with black. LOVE your white collection in there!

  8. I lucked out and found a bamboo cabinet for a steel on CL last winter
and finally got it painted recently. It was a beast getting it home and I
really tried my husband's patience arranging to get it home and
everything, but it was so worth it. Good luck finding one, but this one
looks great and will be ready to sell (and fetch a good price) when you
do find the one you want!

  9. I love it black! Perfect. No need for bamboo. The dentil molding and top pediment gives it plenty of character. (I love bamboo, but bamboo will be "out" before you know it!)

  10. Bethany, this is stunning and I love all of your beautiful milk glass styled inside. At first I thought there were stripes along the back, but then I realized it was your artwork across the room. ;) I think Kristin cut apart tiki torches for her bamboo trim on her cabinet...maybe an option? But, this looks so great I think I'd just leave it alone until you find the right piece. Maybe add a few backplates on some of the knobs if you want a little more detail?

  11. I have to very respectfully disagree with Trish (who has a very neat blog!), but chinoiserie and faux bamboo have been around since the seventeenth century - it may be trending now, but it's definitely a classic. The glossy black looks great though, for sure. And you mentioned blemishes being noticeable - I've found that's true with glossy finishes in general - I think the way glossy finishes reflect light highlights imperfections. I just roll with it though, like you say, you will notice it more than others.

  14. Thanks Trish! My tastes are always changing so you might be right. I feel like there's something classic about bamboo though. Who knows what I'll end up with! :)

  15. Thanks so much Jennifer! I thought about doing the tiki torches thing, but wasn't sure if I could get them to lay perfectly flat. I'll have to look at her tutorial again. I think I'll probably just wait for the right one to come along.

  17. Thanks Vel! It is getting a little bit out of control so I've put my "collecting" on hold until I can make room for more pieces :)

  20. Thanks so much! It was definitely a big job, I'd been putting it off for too long for that very reason. I think that will be the last time I paint it! :)

  21. I agree, I think bamboo is pretty classic. I don't think I would tire of it, but then again my taste is always changing so who knows. I think you're right about glossy finishes, they definitely show the imperfections more, but I think the end result is worth it!
