Bamboo Hutch Makeover

Happy Friday!  I feel like I always say it, but I'm so glad the weekend is finally here.  We are celebrating my nephew turning three and of course Mother's day on Sunday.  I'm definitely looking forward to some family time!  

I know bamboo furniture is pretty trendy right now, but I've always loved the look of it.  I think it's classic enough that it will stay "in style" for a while.  So when I saw this hutch on Craigslist for a steal, I jumped on it.  We already had a hutch in my office, but I knew this one would be a better fit.  I completely forgot to take a before picture before I jumped in, so here's a before picture courtesy of the Craigslist post.  

It's hard to tell from the picture, but it was in pretty bad shape.  Structurally it was good, but aesthetically it was awful.  It was beat up and sooo dirty.  So after a good cleaning and some prepping I got to work with the paint.  I love bamboo furniture in pretty much any color, but I felt like this needed something bold.  I have been adding touches of green throughout our downstairs and since our floorpan is so open, I felt like green would be the perfect choice.  After coat one I was beginning to doubt that decision.  It looked so neon!    

But I stuck it out, knowing you can't always judge a paint color by the first coat.  I'm thankful I did because it ended up being exactly what I had envisioned!  The color is Behr Moss Landing.  It's a mix between emerald and olive.

I sprayed the existing hardware and hinges with design master brilliant gold.  I found it at Michael's and used a 40% off coupon.  I've heard people say such good things about that paint and I have to say I was really impressed.  The color is great, it dries super fast, and the best part of all is that it doesn't smudge when you touch it.  I love Rustoleum Gold Metallic spray paint, but if I use it on something that's going to get handled a lot it does not hold up well and shows smudges so easily.  I'm sure you've noticed that if you've used it before.  If you get a chance to try the design master gold, I think you'll love it.  

I love how the white milk glass really pops against the green.  I had to edit my collection a little to make it all fit in this smaller hutch, but it was worth it!

I will say I'm so glad it's finished.  Hutches are my very least favorite thing to paint.  They really are such a pain with all the surfaces you have to cover.  And I think I did 5 coats of paint on this one, I stopped counting after 3.  I don't know if it was the paint or me, but it was a doozy.  In the end it was worth it, but you won't find me looking at hutches any time soon. :)
