DIY Custom Curtains

Our guest room is almost finished!  For some reason the last few touches are taking me forever.  But, I have made some progress so that's good.  It's a fairly small room and most of the elements are pretty neutral so I knew I wanted to do a patterned window treatment to liven things up.  I searched for a fabric that I liked for a while but came up empty handed.  Of course I did find a few that would have worked, but they didn't fit the small budget I had for this room.
Well, I stumbled upon this tablecloth at Hobby Lobby and knew it would be perfect!  It was on major sale because it was part of their spring line, so the price was definitely right.

I could have just hemmed it and hung it up with curtain clips, but I wanted it to feel a little more finished and a little more custom looking.  So I lined the back with IKEA Vivan curtain panels.  I didn't want these to be light blocking because of the small space, but I definitely wanted them to have more weight.  The Vivan panels worked perfectly for this.  If you want something thicker or light blocking you can use a thicker panel.

Start by laying your tablecloth face down on a large flat surface.  Our foyer has worked perfectly for many of my sewing projects lately!  Then lay the curtain panel on top of the tablecloth, face down as well.

I started by pinning and sewing the top edge.  Just fold the fabric down, pin and sew.

I repeated that same process for the sides and bottom.  I did end up hemming the bottom because we only have 8 ft. ceilings throughout the upstairs.  I used the backtabs from the Vivan curtain panel to hang the curtains on the rod.

It's amazing what a difference something simple like curtains can make in a room.  I love that they didn't cost me a fortune either!  And in case anyone is wondering the wall color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray color matched to Valspar paint.  It's a great greige with no funky undertones.
